TL;DR: React Native and Flutter debate is old. In practice, each fits different contexts. Here’s what we learned from 5 real projects.

The Basics

React Native: JavaScript + native views. Meta-backed.

Flutter: Dart + own rendering engine. Google-backed.

Both cross-platform. Both mature.

Performance

Flutter: consistently 60fps. Own rendering. No JS bridge.

React Native: getting better with New Architecture (Fabric). Still occasional jank.

For animation-heavy apps: Flutter wins.

Developer Experience

React Native: JavaScript/TypeScript. Huge ecosystem. Familiar for web devs.

Flutter: Dart. Cleaner but new to learn.

Hot reload: both excellent.

Native Feel

React Native: uses native components. Truly native look automatically.

Flutter: renders own widgets. Looks great but not “native”.

iOS users: notice difference. Android users: less sensitive.

Package Ecosystem

React Native: bigger ecosystem. Almost every JS library has RN version.

Flutter: smaller but growing fast. Quality generally higher.

For niche needs: React Native usually has answer.

Team Considerations

Existing React team: React Native no-brainer.

Starting fresh: either works.

Hiring: React Native devs easier to find in Israel.

Project Type Matters

Content-heavy apps (news, blogs): React Native fine.

Animation-heavy (fitness, games): Flutter better.

Fintech/banking: Flutter’s consistent rendering wins.

Ecommerce: React Native’s native feel wins.

Testing

Both have good testing frameworks.

Flutter: widget testing built-in, powerful.

React Native: Jest + Detox for E2E.

Native Integration

Push notifications, camera, biometrics: both handle well.

Rare native APIs: might need custom native code (Swift/Kotlin).

Both allow drop into native when needed.

Build and Deploy

React Native: Metro bundler, Xcode/Android Studio for builds.

Flutter: single build command.

CI/CD: both integrate with Bitrise, App Center, Codemagic.

Web Support

React Native Web: possible but limited.

Flutter Web: works but performance/SEO issues.

For truly cross-platform (mobile + web): consider native React web + React Native for mobile.

Long-term Maintenance

Both have upgrade challenges.

React Native: major upgrades painful (bridge → new arch).

Flutter: more consistent upgrade path.

Our Recommendation

Fitness/animation-heavy: Flutter.

Content/ecommerce apps: React Native.

Existing React team: React Native.

Starting fresh, no preference: 50/50. Try prototypes in both.
