WebSockets vs Server-Sent Events – When to Use What

TL;DR: Real-time communication has two main approaches. Choosing wrong = complexity or performance issues.

What Each Is

WebSocket: bidirectional persistent connection.

SSE: server-to-client one-way streaming over HTTP.

Both work, different use cases.

WebSockets – Pros

Bidirectional: client can send too.

Low latency.

Efficient for high-frequency.

Real-time chat, gaming, collaboration.

WebSockets – Cons

Not standard HTTP.

Firewall issues (rare in 2026).

Requires special server setup.

Reconnection handling manual.

SSE – Pros

Simple: uses HTTP.

Auto-reconnection.

Works through proxies.

Perfect for LLM streaming.

SSE – Cons

One-way only.

Limited connections per browser.

HTTP overhead.

No binary data.

Chat Applications

WebSockets typically.

Bidirectional need.

High volume.

Low latency important.

LLM Response Streaming

SSE ideal.

One-way: server → client.

Text streaming.

Auto-reconnection valuable.

Live Updates

Dashboard updates: SSE fine.

Trading tickers: WebSocket for scale.

Notifications: SSE simpler.

Depends on volume.

Multiplayer Games

WebSockets.

Bidirectional constant.

Low latency critical.

Often UDP alternatives too.

Collaborative Editing

WebSockets.

Both send and receive constantly.

Operational transformation.

Complex but real-time critical.

Server Requirements

WebSocket: needs WS-capable server (Node, Go, most languages).

SSE: any HTTP server.

PHP: WebSockets awkward, SSE natural.

Scaling Considerations

WebSockets: connection state expensive.

SSE: cleaner scaling with load balancers.

Both need distributed state for multi-server.

Redis pub/sub common.

Browser Support

Both universally supported.

IE gone.

Mobile: both work.

Not a factor anymore.

Fallbacks

WebSockets fail? Long polling.

SSE fail? Polling.

Libraries handle: Socket.io, others.

Fewer needed in 2026.

Security

Both: use WSS/HTTPS.

Authentication: token in URL/header.

CSRF protection.

Origin validation.

Cost

WebSocket connections: expensive per host.

SSE: HTTP connection.

Managed services (Pusher, Ably, Twilio): scale but $.

Own infra: cheaper at scale.

Framework Support

Node.js: both native.

Python: FastAPI, Django Channels.

Ruby: ActionCable.

PHP: SSE trivial, WebSocket ratchet.

Our Recommendation

LLM streaming: SSE.

Chat: WebSockets.

Dashboard: SSE.

Collaboration: WebSockets.

Live tickers: WebSockets.

Simple notifications: SSE.
