TL;DR: Compliance dashboards are used daily by risk managers. Bad UX = missed alerts, regulatory issues. Here’s how to design right.

The User – Not You

Compliance officer, risk manager, MLRO. Not designers.

They work under pressure. Time-sensitive decisions.

Design for their reality, not your assumptions.

Alert-First Design

Top of screen: how many alerts need review?

Prioritized: high-risk cases visible immediately.

Time-critical: SLA countdown visible.

Decision Support

Show WHY case flagged. What triggered the alert.

Provide context: customer history, similar cases.

Recommend action based on rules.

Reduce Cognitive Load

Compliance work is exhausting. Reduce decisions where possible.

Grouping: similar cases together.

Batch actions: approve multiple similar low-risk cases.

Default actions: system suggests, user confirms.

Investigation Tools

Timeline view: customer’s activity chronologically.

Network view: connections to other entities.

Transaction flow: money movement visualization.

Notes and attachments: build case file.

Approval Workflows

Multi-level: low risk = single approver. High risk = 2-3 approvers.

Escalation: automatic when SLA missed.

Delegation: for holidays, out-of-office.

Audit trail: every step logged.

Reporting Views

Operational: today’s queue, my cases.

Management: team performance, backlog trends.

Regulatory: quarterly/annual reports.

All views customizable per role.

Search That Actually Works

Search by: name, ID, transaction, customer, date range.

Fuzzy matching: names might be spelled differently.

Saved searches: frequent queries as shortcuts.

Bulk Actions

Some tasks are routine on multiple cases.

Enable: select 20 cases, mark reviewed, add same note.

Safety: confirmation before destructive actions.

Mobile Access

Compliance officers travel, work remote.

Mobile-optimized: view case, approve, add note.

Not full functionality – focused workflows.

Notifications

Critical: SLA breach imminent, high-risk case new.

Channels: in-app, email, SMS for urgent.

Configurable: users define what’s important.

Documentation Integration

Every action documents case file.

Regulator asks – export complete history instantly.

Templates: standard responses save time.

Performance

Compliance systems handle millions of records.

Search must be sub-second.

Filters must be instant.

Slow = frustrated users = mistakes.

Analytics for Management

Team productivity: cases per person, resolution time.

Risk trends: increasing alerts in certain categories.

False positive rates: system tuning needed.

Regulator questions: instant answers.
